2006 - 2007 Highlights

During the 2006-2007 year, JLN celebrated thirty 31 years of community service!  We spent the year reflecting on the past, expanding on our current endeavors and looking toward changes for the future.  The Board of Directors continued to focus on our Strategic Plan, which was completed and distributed to all members in early fall of 2005.  All of JLN’s teams and committees worked toward achieving the goals set forth in our Strategic Plan.  Here are some of the highlights of the year:

The Advisory Planning committee, perhaps, led JLN toward our biggest change of the year.  Our membership decided it was time to focus our resources in one area of need.  After months of research, discussion, and educational opportunities, we voted in our first focus – Fitness and Nutrition.

After developing a Research and Development Task Force , the JLN members have chosen the Monster Dash 5K Run and 1 mile Fun Run/Walk as its new Fall Fundraiser.  The Monster Dash committee worked throughout the spring and summer in preparation for the 1st annual event scheduled for October 27, 2007. The Charity Ball committee organized another fun and successful Ball.  This memorable event was one of this year’s most celebrated events in the community. In honor of Oklahoma’s Centennial Celebration, we paid homage to some of the remarkable women from our community and great state. Nearly $85,000 was raised for the Junior League of Norman projects, which was almost double from the previous year.  Attendance was also up by 60%.

The Annual Report beautifully presented the most recent year with a shoe theme: “Stepping into our Community.”  From baby booties for Baby Steps, to high heels for the Charity Ball, to a pair of “working” tennis shoes for Community Projects, all the different styles of shoes represented the League’s commitment to go out into the Norman Community and make a difference in the lives of our citizens.

Kids in the Kitchen, designed to address childhood obesity, was recently deemed an ongoing awareness initiative for the Association of Junior Leagues International Inc.  In March 2007, Junior League of Norman members visited Eisenhower Elementary School to teach third and fourth graders about nutrition and exercise.  The event consisted of a Food Fair where the children rotated among four booths, each one designed to teach about different aspects of the food pyramid and exercise.

Through committees, projects, fundraisers, and training opportunities, members of the Junior League of Norman have donated over 6000 hours of volunteer time this past year.
