A “Sample” of Sooner Heritage

JLN members - Sooner SamplerNorman has a rich and unique history that began in 1889 with the Oklahoma Land Run. An estimated 150 people, many in covered wagons known as “prairie schooners,” settled along the banks of the Canadian River, and the town of Norman was born. One year later, our citizens donated 40 acres of land for a campus site, and founded the University of Oklahoma, which enrolled 100 students in 1895.

Today, Norman has more that 95,000 residents, and the University’s enrollment is in excess of 25,000 students. OU's Continuing Education is ranked among the nation’s top five institutions, offering more than 2,000 courses, activities, workshops and custom program development to more than 200,000 nontraditional learners with more than 60 locations around the world.

cookbook cover graphicThe nickname ”Sooners” was originally associated with the settlers who headed west before the official beginning of the Land Run on April 22, 1889. It has now come to symbolize the spirit of progressivism that characterizes our community. Sooners are energetic, “can-do” individuals, who take pride in pioneering new developments. Much of our areas of development can be credited to the cattle and oil industries, but we have also become known for our prosperous wheat, pecan and peach farms.

Norman is a town full of tradition, and its citizens are known for their genuine warmth and friendliness, as well as for their diverse cultures. It has a wide selection of quality restaurants, many of which have contributed recipes to this book.

The "Sooner Sampler" cookbook recipe variety ranges from the southwest favorites of a pioneer cook to the cosmopolitan flair of a university town.

We hope you enjoy this sample of Sooner fare.
