Charity Ball and Taster’s Affair

Charity Ball 2006 JLN membersThe Junior League of Norman’s Charity Ball was one of the year’s most celebrated events in the community. We were guided by the Oklahoma Centennial to pay homage to some of the remarkable women from our community and great state.

The ball was not only a historic celebration, but a glamorous black-tie event attended by the “Who’s Who” of Norman. The theme for this year was “The Oklahoma Legends Ball: Celebrating 100 Years of Dynamic Oklahoma Women.”   The ball took place on April 14, 2007 at the Marriott Postal Training Center. Nearly $85,000 was raised for the Junior League of Norman projects!

The League honored several Oklahoma legends including Emmy-award winning newscaster Linda Cavanaugh, former First Lady Molly Shi Boren, Miss America 2006 Jennifer Berry and Junior League of Norman Sustainer Anne McCurdy.

Members of the community nominated and voted on the Norman Community award, which was given to Mary Louise Symcox. Legendary artist Greg Burns unveiled his 200 signed and limited edition Oklahoma Centennial prints, commissioned solely by Junior League and available exclusively at the Oklahoma Legends Ball. Mr. Burns’ sole Centennial project was unveiled by Mary Louise Symcox.

The evening’s events included a Taster’s Affair, where guests sampled cuisine from 25 of Norman’s finest restaurants. New to Taster’s Affair this year were Old Russia Vodka Distillery, who served flavored martini samples, as well as wine tastings from Oklahoma’s own Grape Ranch Vineyards and Deer Creek Vineyards. They were welcome additions and proved to be some of the favorites of the guests. Charleston’s won “Best Decorated Table”, while Abbey Road Catering came in a close second. Mrs. Molly Shi Boren had the honor of cutting the Centennial Cake, provided by Amy Cakes.

Guests raved about the new items in the live and silent auctions:

  • VIP tickets to The Ellen DeGeneres show with airfare courtesy of Southwest Airlines and hotel accommodations courtesy of The Chamberlain Hotel in West Hollywood
  • autographed memorabilia from Oklahoma artists including Vince Gill, Reba McIntire and Toby Keith courtesy of Universal Music Nashville
  • a custom couture designer cocktail dress by Project Runway’s Kayne Gillaspie
  • vacation homes in San Miguel, Mexico and Destin, Florida
  • one carat Leslie Greene diamond necklace
  • four-course dinner by Benvenuti’s chef in your private home
  • an in-home wardrobe assessment complete with an all-expense paid trip to the Dallas Market and shopping spree from Appello
  • and much more!

Attendees were serenaded Oklahoma songs by the OU Men’s Select Chorus as they entered the ballroom. The feminine color palette mimicked the Oklahoma sunset: reds, pinks, oranges and yellows - which were used in the lighting, flower arrangements and tablescapes. Corporate tables were able to name their table after their own Legends.

Live entertainment was provided by Oklahoma’s own Smilin’ Vic and the Soul Monkeys, and the late-night crowd stayed to dance to the club hits of a DJ.
