Reflecting on 30-Plus Years ~ Junior League of Norman History
1975 – The first Great Pumpkin Sale was held at the Firehouse Art Station as the first fundraiser.
1977 – The first volume of the Newsleaguer – JLN’s news sheet – was published in September. JLN began receiving a grant from Reading is Fundamental (RIF), the nation’s largest nonprofit children’s literacy organization, to conduct RIF’s National Book Program.
1980 – Established the Stovall Museum Mobile Outreach Program and funded a birthing room at the Norman Municipal Hospital for $8500.
1981 – Established the Early Rider, infant car seat loan and education program, the first in Oklahoma.
1983 – Held the first Boomer Bargains Auction fundraiser which netted over $12,000.
1985 – Three new projects were adopted: We Help Ourselves, Kids on the Block, and Health for Friends.
1987 – Thrift shop opened in February.
1988 – “Sooner Sampler” cookbook was published in October.
1990 – Received the 1989-90 Public Service award from the Oklahoma Society to Prevent Blindness for the work of Pre-school Vision Screening.
1995 – Produced the first Annual Report to the community.
1998 – Researched and began two new projects: Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History training program for volunteers and Preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome partnering with Norman Regional Hospital.
2000 – Baby Steps served eighteen mothers. RIF distributed almost 3,600 books to area children. Teen Volunteer placed ninety-five teens with eleven community agencies.
2001 – Two new projects were implemented: Done-In-A-Day and Neighborhood Centers.
2002 – The membership drive yielded 68 new provisionals.
2004 – The first ever AJLI Healthy League Initiative was completed. AJLI President Pam Newby was an honored guest speaker and all in all members gave 10,240 volunteer hours to the Norman community.
2006 - Adopted the first focus for the League - 'Fitness and Nutrition'
